The Chancel Celtic Cross

The Kirk's Chancel/Processional cross was missing and presumed stolen after September 11 of 2002. After a period of six weeks, the artist who created the cross, Bob Bassler, concluded that the cross was not likely to be recovered and that it must be replaced as soon as possible.

His first intention was to replicate the stolen cross exactly, but, since exact replication was virtually impossible, he ultimately decided that artistic license would be a necessary element in the process. As a result, there are many symbolic elements that are very similar, and some that are missing altogether. For example, he decided to eliminate the central X that was originally intended to signify the cross of Saint Andrew, and in whose honor the first cross was originally created. Instead he decided to emphasize the O, symbolizing the circle of all creation. In addition an “eye” element, symbolizing the “All Seeing Eye of God” appears in the center of the great O.

As in all Bob's freestanding crosses, this new Celtic Cross is dual in nature, having two sides of different design. The wood utilized in the construction of the cross is the recycled Ash from the louvered grill that covered the entire back wall of our Sanctuary before the earthquake of 1994. Bassler said “I am very hopeful that the new, subtly different Chancel Cross will be acceptable for worship, useful and pleasing to the Kirk's congregation for years to come.”
